What is Scarification?

Lawn Scarification is a process in which surface thatch is mechanically removed from a lawn. Thatch is an organic matter found on all lawns which consists of dead and living lawn material such as grass shoots, moss, leaves, and roots and can be located between the top level of the soil and the grass shoots.

A small amount of thatch is needed for a healthy lawn as it promotes strength and resilience for the grass however when too much thatch accumulates, the health of the lawn can be severely impacted as water, nutrients and air to the soil and roots is restricted which in turn impedes grass growth and allows moss, weeds and disease to build up. Furthermore, the extra thatch is a haven for pests that reside in the lawn.

How is lawn Scarification Carried out?

Lawn Scarification is carried out by using a professional scarifying machine with several sharp rotating blades. This cuts into the grass vertically and removes the thatch and moss which improves lawn health by enabling elements such as water, air and fertilisers to reach the grass roots.

When should lawn Scarification be carried out?

Scarification can leave the lawn looking untidy so the best time to carry this out is when the grass is actively growing so that it can recover from the process. This is usually in the Autumn and Spring. It is recommended that the lawn is mowed prior to Scarification to benefit fully from this procedure.
